At our Club meeting tonight, we will have a chance to refresh our knowledge of
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). This is performed during cardiac or respiratory arrest
to maintain circulation until spontaneous heartbeat and breathing can be restored. It
combines chest compressions with rescue breaths. An AED (automated external
defibrillator) which uses electricity to restart the heart can also be used. A gold coin is
encouraged as a donation to the QES volunteers providing this demonstration and offering
free CPR training to the public.

Chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom affecting women and men. Men
typically present with sudden chest pain or pressure, with pain radiating to the left arm, neck,
jaw or shoulder and shortness of breath, cold sweats and dizziness. Women often experience
less obvious symptoms eg unusual fatigue, shortness of breath, mild chest discomfort,
nausea, pain in the back, neck, jaw or upper abdomen and tend to ignore the symptoms
attributing them to stress or digestive issues. Both sexes share common risk factors: high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking and family history. Women
generally experience heart attacks later than men, around age 72 versus 65 for men, partly
due to estrogen's protective effects before menopause.

Rotary. If you are interested please contact nambour.rotary@bigpond.com or Steve Morrison
