                                                          President Sandra Harrington

At Mooloolaba Rotary we participate in many Youth Projects involving young people under
18, from EarlyAct, Interact, Equine Therapy, Youth Exchange, RYDA and Telling Stories. It
is therefore important that we are aware of and implement the Child Safety Policies of Rotary
International, the Child Protection Act 1999 (Qld) and our By-Laws to ensure that we
        manage any risks.

Members, non-members and volunteers, should understand their obligations in providing a
safe environment. The majority of our activities are conducted in partnership with schools,
and we are therefore bound by the Child Protection Policies of the partner school. It is rare
for a Rotarian to be involved in any one-on-one activities with a child, therefore reducing our
        risk.

Evidence of our Club in meeting our obligations is provided by all members holding a
current Blue Card and Youth Exchange hosts having reference checks conducted. Lyn Epps
our Child Protection Officer is extremely diligent in ensuring that members have current Blue
Cards and records them on our member's website.

Anyone working or volunteering with children in Queensland must obtain a Blue Card. Blue
Cards can be applied for through the Queensland Government's on-line portal, and currency
can also be checked via the portal. For more information visit Blue Card Services | Your
rights, crime and the law | Queensland Government. Application forms are also available on
the Club website. Once Blue Card is received Lyn must be informed.
It is imperative therefore that all Mooloolaba Rotarians ensure that they have a current Blue
Card and our members who do not have one should apply or renew immediately. The excess
on the Child Protection Insurance is $75,000 this year if any claim is brought against us. This
excess is covered by District and Zone if we have taken all measures to ensure that anyone
working with young people meet the legal requirements.

Early in the New Year, I will conduct a Child Safety workshop and participation certificates
will be lodged with our District, Blue Cards will be checked and By-Laws revisited.
