International Women's Day was celebrated last week with the theme for 2026 being "Balance
the Scales". Across Australia, conviction rates for sexual assault cases remain persistently
low - with the latest NSW figures revealing just an 11% conviction rate, underscoring the
immense gap between legal protections and real outcomes for survivors. One in three women
worldwide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. First Nations women
are 34 times more likely to be hospitalised due to family violence than non-Indigenous
        women. (unwomen.org.au)

UN Women Australia CEO Simone Clarke said: "Balance the Scales is a promise for every
woman and girl to be safe, heard, and free to shape her own future. In 2026, unjust laws,
policies, and ingrained barriers still stand in the way of fair and inclusive communities".

On 21 March, Greater Springfield Rotary are hosting an event and selling raffle tickets to
raise funds for underprivileged Cambodian children. Information about the event and the $20
raffle tickets can be obtained by telephoning 0478161169.

Our Rotary District is strengthening its youth protection framework and formally adopting
the Queensland Child Safe Standards. This will entail updating compliance and screening
requirements, training, reporting and governance. Information sessions will be available on
zoom on 10 April 2026 and are to be attended by Club President, Youth Director and Youth
        Protection Officer.

A good news story, relating to Noah Champion, Sunshine Coast Rotaract member who last
year entered his business idea in a competition through Generation innovation. He has now
launched the business - Sentimental Cards. He commented: "I want to make greeting cards
more than just a piece of card - I want them to be a visual experience, a tangible keepsake."
        Congratulations Noah.
