Guest Speaker – Monday 4 November
Sunshine Coast mayoral candidate in the last elections, Min Swan, spoke to the Club on 4
November about her approach seeking a meaningful and satisfying life and career. An
approach which has developed over the years in the light of her life experience and reading.
‘Chapters of My Life’ was the title Min chose for her address. It covered Min’s early
successes in financial management with her husband; then through several challenges
seeking happiness and fulfilment, and to her current career in Event Management. Her
candid and motivating story recalled the Spice Girls song ‘Wanabe’ (Tell me what you want,
what you really, really want). Min appropriately illustrated her story with references to
influential reading she encountered at various stages in her life.
The essence of Min’s message was to strive to know oneself; and to determine which are our
own priorities that will make us truly happy. She spoke of the need for constant adjustment
to our circumstances, and importantly, to make hard-headed choices directed to what really
matters for us. Some things would need to be foregone to achieve what we want most.
Challenges make us grow and develop. The experience of the significant ones can be life-
changing to the extent that, afterwards, we aren’t able to approach life as we did before.
Three of books Min referenced hold promise of worthwhile reads:
‘The E-Myth’ by Michael Gerber; ‘The Passion Test’ by Janet Bray Attwood, and ‘Rise’ by
Mark Bouris.
